Things you should know before you start crochet
Crochet is a type of yarn work using a hook. It is very relaxing and can even make you a career.

Starting out
I believe that the easiest project to start on is a granny square. These decorative squares with cool patterns may be tricky but once you get the hang of them they are so easy. Before you start one of these you will need to know the chain stitch, the slip stitch, the double crochet, and maybe a single crochet. I recommend the tutorial by ginger knots on YouTube. Another easy thing to start on is a plushie. These take slightly thicker yarn if you want a chenille look or you can use thin yarn if you want a different look. And use the single crochet, increase, decrease and magic ring.
This is the difference in yarn type. They were made using the exact same pattern.
Materials I recommend getting
Obviously you will need a hook and yarn but these are a few things I think would make your crochet journey an easier experience.
Crochet hook set - most hook sizes come in a set so you don’t have to buy lots of different separate hooks
Flutterby chunky yarn - I use this yarn for all of my plushies and they turn out adorable. It is very easy to work with and only sheds a little bit
Yarn scissors - Normal scissors will not cut through yarn smoothly so these are a must have!
Stitch markers - these changed my life! If working in a round you can put a stitch marker in the first stitch of your round so you don’t have to count your stitches!
Safety eyes - these are perfect for plushies. They get inserted into a stitch and then you press a back on through the inside.
Darning needles - these are just like normal sewing needles but instead of a tiny eye they have quite a long and wide eye, big enough to fit yarn through. They also aren’t as sharp.
Granny square blocking board - If you are looking to just make granny squares and blankets, cardigans or bags then you need one of these. You place your squares on the board and stick metal or plastic sticks through the corner stitches and they straighten out.
Crochet patterns and a lot of tutorials - tutorials are easier to start with but once you can read the abbreviations of the stitches you can move on to written patterns. Some patterns are free especially on Instagram but paid ad-free patterns are available on Etsy.
