Shrek Jr: Was it a Swamp-tastic Success?

By Eeva Tudor

It’s that time of year once again and I’m here to give you the behind-the-scenes on this year’s school show, Shrek jr! I’m going to be following on from Fallon and interviewing the principal characters to find out what it was like to be in this year’s school show.

The first question I asked these amazing actors was their favourite moment during the show. Lucas Townsend, who played Shrek, said that he found it difficult to choose, but really enjoyed getting to make new friends, and talking to people he wouldn’t usually. Next up was Marni Stephenson, who played Fiona, and she said that she enjoyed learning the Finale song, because it's when Fiona finally accepts herself as an ogre. Then, I asked Ryan Parsons, who played Donkey, the same question and he said that he really loved performing the song ‘Make a Move’ where Donkey is attempting to get Shrek to share his true feelings with Fiona.

Next, I asked each actor the most challenging part of playing their character. Lucas found learning the ‘Travel Song’ the most difficult, as he found that there were some complex notes in it. Marni found it difficult to find how Fiona would act in certain scenes and situations while staying in character. Ryan found it difficult to make his character have contrast in some scenes as he was used to playing a happy, funny character that was a lot closer to his real personality. Even though they found these things difficult, they all did a phenomenal job in all aspects of the show.

Finally, I asked them what their favourite joke or moment was, either during the show or backstage. Lucas enjoyed just getting to joke around and laugh with other cast members and stagehands in his time offstage. Marni enjoyed how people made up a whole host of Shrek-themed puns and compliments that quickly became running jokes within the cast and crew. Ryan’s favourite moment was a line in the script where Donkey calls himself a ‘GPS with fur’.

Overall I think that this year's show has been a swamp-tastic success, with our phenomenal cast, brilliant student-run light, sound and backstage crew, excellent sixth-form photographers and, of course, the amazing show band providing a fantastic live soundtrack as always! Huge props to the Drama, Music, Art and Media departments for coming together to make this incredible production happen. Next year we will be back with High School Musical so make sure you’re ready to get your head in the game!
