Rating
I would rate this book a solid 4.5 ⭐
It is an amazing book, beautifully written and very vivid, however I don’t think it was for my age range as it felt like it was written for a mature 9-10 year old and I was nearly 12 with a mature reading range when I read it (for example I was reading the cruel prince and a good girls guide to murder). But if I had been younger it would’ve been a 5⭐ for definite.
Should you read it?
Should you read this book? Why or why not? If you are a mature young reader or looking for a fun book - Shrapnel boys is perfect for you. If you are an older reader, more serious and darker - this book is maybe not for you. If in between - maybe give it a go!
What is it about?
Shrapnel Boys is an explosive new novel about the friendship and courage of a group of young boys living through the Second World War, from award-winning author Jenny Pearson. When war comes to London in 1939, Ronnie Smith is scared and excited: scared of the bombs that fall at night, but excited to race his friends to collect the best bits of shrapnel every morning.
But for Ronnie, the battles aren't just in the sky and on the streets. They're at school and at home too. His little brother is up to no good with a secret job and dangerous new friends, and Ronnie's worried he's getting himself into big trouble.
Ronnie's desperate to help his little brother. But he isn't expecting to uncover secrets that could change the fate of the whole war…
On Goodreads, this book is rated a 4.49, with people saying it's “an incredibly accomplished novel!” and the type of story the likes of “Michael Morpurgo or Phil Earle would be proud to have written”
