Problems with our Planet

By Annabelle Robson

Today our world, the people and animals in it, have been facing dreadful problems I find appalling to hear. It seems impossible to understand how some of these problems still occur with our greater understanding of people and animals. We should be helping each other, not breaking each other apart. These are my problems with the world I would change.

Hear me out.

Cruelty towards animals, whether it be awful, horrendous living conditions they are put through or being abused and abandoned like the 22,908 animals according to the RSPCA. It seems this problem is overlooked by many considering animals are still forced into tiny living spaces like the many orcas in Seaworld. Imagine yourself how horrible it must be, left to starve on the streets. Neglected by many. Is this really what we want for our animals? Of Course not, and wildlife shelters like the RSPCA are working to prevent it but they cannot do it alone.

I still find it hard to hear many people worldwide are being discriminated against purely because of their race and sexuality. Hating on another person because of who they are is completely unacceptable. Luckily, there are many places to feel included. For example, throughout June (Official Pride month) there will be many festivals celebrating pride. For those who still go against who people want to be, just picture a world where everyone is the same. Boring, right? Everyone is completely different, all with different personalities, views and perspectives that all need to be respected.

Only being realised as a serious threat now is that of Pollution. Pollution by plastic or by chemicals, neither are the right way to go. Right now our oceans are covered in 46,000 square miles of plastic and are gradually increasing. Despite the many new reports of saving our planet and temperatures dramatically rising it appears not everyone is taking action. It seems impossible to not know about the problems we cause with pollution. We feel summers getting hotter, animals dying out and the 1.6 million square metres taken up by the Great Pacific garbage patch is surely noticeable. So why aren’t we making changes? The future is in our hands now. We caused this problem, it’s now time to stop it.

These ideas are only a few of the challenges we have to face worldwide. However, there are plenty of ways to counter all of these problems. We must change now; for the better of the planet and the huge variety of people and animals within it we must make a change now, before it is too late.
