Mental Health Week: The Importance Of Mental Health

By Gracie Mair

An interesting look into why Mental Health is so important and how learning about it benefits us.

On average, one in every four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year. Shocking, isn’t it? Someone that you know is most likely dealing with mental health issues right now, and whether it is obvious or not, they may be struggling. Mental health is such a crucial subject to discuss and be educated on as it affects so many of us in our lives and as a result, schools have changed drastically in the past few decades, educating young people on how to deal with and understand various mental disorders. Many of us may be aware of those with mental health disorders and will already be trying to find help, or you may be suffering from a mental health disorder yourself. This article covers why mental health is such a crucial subject to discuss.

Depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, psychosis and many other mental health disorders could affect anyone no matter social status, economic status, personality or situation in life. A common misconception with mental health is that rich / well-off people can’t be depressed or have a “hard” life. The fact of the matter is that most mental health issues are a chemical imbalance in the brain and do not stem from a person’s situations. Mental health issues are a taboo subject in general conversations and with people speaking out about it. It is seen as almost an inappropriate and disrespectful subject to talk about, which shouldn’t be the case.

If you believe you might be suffering with a mental illness, do not be afraid to talk to someone about it. There are so many people that would listen to you and help you. It is important that you don’t forget that there is always someone there for you, and remember that people have jobs to specifically deal with this topic.
