It's A Boy! The Duchess of Cambridge Gives Birth to a Baby Boy

By Daniel Hordon

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have announced the name of their newborn baby boy as Louis Arthur Charles.

The Duchess of Cambridge, it has been announced, has been delivered of a baby boy at 11:01am on Monday. The birth was confirmed just after 1pm following an earlier announcement from Kensington Palace that Her Royal Highness had been admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital in London in the early hours of the morning. Kensington Palace, the official residence of the Cambridges, tweeted:

“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 1101hrs.

The baby weighs 8lbs 7oz.

The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”

Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh have been informed of the news and are said to be delighted. Theresa May also tweeted her congratulations earlier, passing on her “warmest congratulations” to the royal couple:

The Duchess had postponed royal duties on the 22nd of March when she commenced maternity leave with expectation building on the 9th of April when parking restrictions were enforced outside of the Lindo Wing maternity ward where the Duchess was, today, delivered of her child. The latest arrival was born in the same hospital as his brother, Prince George, and Sister, Princess Charlotte, were in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

The Palace had been forced to announce the pregnancy before the 12 week point due to her pulling out of official duties because of the Duchess’ suffering from a severe form of morning sickness which she had also experienced during her previous 2 pregnancies. While the announcement had been made in October, no due date was confirmed apart from the news that the baby was expected sometime this month.

It is expected that the Duke and Duchess will pose for the media with the newborn when they are discharged from hospital, as has previously occurred. Prince George and Princess Charlotte are also expected to visit after George visited the hospital after the birth of his younger sister in 2013. The child will not succeed Princess Charlotte in the line of succession due to legislation passed before the birth of Prince George in 2013 which made female royals equal to their male counterparts in the line to the throne.

Speculation is continuing to build over the name of the baby who replaces Prince Harry as 5th in line to the throne. While born on St George’s Day, the name has been ruled out due to his sibling being of the same name. Bookmakers are currently taking bets on the name with the favourite being Arthur at just 6/4. Also among the favourites are James, Albert and Philip (according to the bookmaker oddschecker.com), all of which have connections to the Royal Family.
