Between Wednesday 21st and Saturday 24th of March, a number of students from CLV competed in the 112th Wansbeck Music Festival. The competition was hosted over a week in Newbiggin and Morpeth and this year was adjudicated by Christine Thompson. CLV’s entrants included everything from choirs to rock bands and from vocal solos to musical theatre duets resulting in a total of 11 1st place wins and 11 2nd places, alongside numerous 3rd places and many honorable placings in very competitive categories.

On Wednesday 21st, the U18 band (consisting of Jason Ying, Rhiannon Shieber, Jonny Vass and Jack Dixon), U16 band (consisting of Matthew Murray, Josh Parr, Matthew Wade, Kieron Warnaby and Amy Langdown) , U13 band (consisting of Euan, Thomas, Taylor and Matthew) and a hand full of soloists went to the first part of the competition at Newbiggin sports centre. Oliver Davenport came in 2nd in the ‘U18 acoustic guitar’ category and Euan Parker came 1st in the ‘U13 guitar solo’ category. Matthew Wade and Sam Pattinson came  joint 2nd in the ‘U16 drum solo category’ and in the ‘U18 drum solo’ category, Jason Ying came 1st with Matthew Wade coming 2nd. In the ‘electric guitar solo’ categories, Kieron Warnaby came 1st and Josh Parr 2nd in the U16 and Lewis Pringle came in 1st with Jonny Vass and Jack Dixon coming in joint 2nd for the U18s.

Competitors from the CLV ensemble at the 112th Wansbeck Music Festival

On the Thursday, it was choir day. The CLV ensemble performed in two categories - the ‘school choir two choice songs’ and the ‘school choir hymns’ category; they came out with impressive results in both categories, placing 1st in the hymns with ‘Give me a Clean Heart’, including solos from Lindsay Booth and Nathan Crispin and taking an honorable 2nd place in the two choice songs category with ‘White Winter Hymnal’ and ‘Parting Glass’. On top of this, CLV entered a Vocal Quartet consisting of Lindsay Booth, Nathan Crispin, Oliver Davenport and Amy Langdown, led by ensemble leader and singing teacher Sarah Gray.  We also got to see a beautiful rendition of ‘Words Ain't Enough’ by Dodie Clark, performed by Molly Howes in the ‘open age self accompanied song’ category on guitar.

Saturday 24th was the final day of competitions. In the morning it was the ‘15 and under vocal solo’ category and ‘U16 Piano solo’ category. In the Vocal solo category, Jessica Batey, Callum Picton, Gracie Fisher, Holly Davenport and Amy Langdown sang a wide range of songs from stage and screen. In this category, CLV took a clean sweep of placings with Callum Picton being placed runner up with his favourite solo song from ‘Billy Elliot’: ‘Electricity’. Picton also performed as Billy Elliot last week in CLV’s performance of the show and has also recently landed a place at a prestigious performing arts school. Amy Langdown was awarded first place following her performance of ‘Don’t Cry for me Argentina’. Next was the U18 Piano solo’ and the ‘U19 Vocal Solo’ categories; Jessica Batey placed 2nd with ‘From a Distance’ in vocal and Jason Ying placed 2nd in piano.

On Sunday the closing concert for the festival was held, where the committee that organises and runs the festival picks their favourite winners from the week to perform in front of an audience including the Mayors of Morpeth and Ashington. This year, Amy Langdown was invited to sing ‘Don’t Cry for me Argentina’ alongside numerous talented people and groups. This year was the first year that a choir was invited back, as the RGS choir sang ‘Close Every Door’ and ‘Chattanooga Choo Choo’. Other honorable mentions go to the ‘Stobart Twins String Quartet’ who performed a beautiful Bach Strings concerto and to Oliver Waterhouse who performed (from memory) a Chopin movement.

All in all, the Wansbeck music festival was a very successful experience for all involved. Here is a full list of all the placings achieved by students at CLV:
