What is it about?

Theodosia is a 1920s Period Drama about a teenager, Theo (Theodosia) and her brother, Henry who live in the Museum of Legends and Antiques. Theo is what her friends call an ‘Egyptonerd’ because she is obsessed and knows everything about Ancient Egypt. The story starts when the children's parents are part of a dig in the desert in Egypt. Theo and Henry go exploring into a tomb and Theo finds an ancient item, the Eye of Horus. It was said to possess magical powers so when Theo touched it her hand ended up with a green air around it and her wearing amulets, making her friends wear them for protection. . They had green fog and hieroglyphics, these items were magical and had ‘Heka’. The 2 season TV show follows Theo and her friends as they conquer ancient Egyptian gods and find peace with themselves in the magical world.Theo expands her magical powers and if the myths ever did become true they would be able to fight the gods and save the world from all evil. She has a signature position that she does before all her spells. She puts her dominant hand up with her fourth finger being pushed down by her thumb, then her index and middle fingers cross over and she starts all her spells with ‘Hear me ancients’. Theo is extremely intelligent and can read, write and speak Ancient Egyptian as well as hieroglyphics. She is gifted in many other subjects including maths and science.

All history and no romance?

They're a bunch of teenagers, of course there's a little bit of romance. Theo starts off with having a crush on Will, the guy that works at the arcade as a magician and helps them on their missions and Henry’s best friend. Henry starts with a crush on Safiya, the Egyptian princess that is studying with them and also helps with their missions. Will also has a crush on Theo. Safiya has a small crush on Will as well. SPOILER ALERT: Will and Theo start dating after they kiss at the end of season 1. Safiya leaves for her studies in Switzerland and now there’s only 3 of them. Theo and Henry get put into school where they find even more gods to battle and they send Aapep to the underworld forever. Henry also meets Maya who is the heart and soul of the school newspaper (A bit like me if I'm being honest, except I am just a writer!). They also meet Darius who is a shapeshifter with a bad sense of self, he wants to get rid of the old him but can't. He is immortal and was Ramses II servant in Ancient Egypt. This is all because he drank water from the Oasis of Magic. Daruis had a crush on Theo all along and did everything for her but she expressed no interest from the beginning as she has a boyfriend and is happy with him. They express the fact they hope to be together forever, which is really cute in my opinion.

The overall feel?

The overall feel of this TV show is a feel good, heroic pre-teen adventure drama. The lead, Theo, is 14 but by the end has just turned 16. Henry is about a year younger than Theo however I’ve done loads of research and it says nowhere how old he is or if he's younger than Theo for definite. So I'm assuming he's younger. There is also a sense of power and what happens if it gets into the wrong hands. This is definitely a TV show where I spent the majority of it screaming at my TV because the characters were doing the ‘wrong thing’ or moving in the ‘wrong direction’. This was happening to the point where my mum would ask if me and my sister were arguing and I would have to say no and that I was screaming at a TV show. The end is also really good and you get a sense of being a winner even though you were never in the battles which I really like. It's like the final defeat, you have defeated the mighty god Aapep for the final time and you have magic in the right place again.

My Rating

My final rating for this is a ⅘ stars. It has some great side stories that you need to know before watching the new season (released May 2024). You can watch it on BBC IPlayer or live on CBBC. It has great storylines and amazing characters who show feminism from the 1920s (such as Theo wearing trousers as part of her school uniform and everyday clothes), which is incredible to see. The romance is there but not too much of it. The historical  facts are so detailed and it shows a good perspective of if the myths came true and how people in power might handle it vs how it might be fought against. Theo is an amazing lead character and I'm sure loads of girls her age might look up to her as a role model which is, again, incredible. It's definitely bingeable in about a week. There are 2 seasons and each episode is 25 minutes long. Each season has 26 episodes where the first 13 are one storyline and the other 13 are a second storyline. There are 4 storylines all together and by storylines I mean the missions they go on and who they end up in a final battle with. This is a must watch over the summer holidays if you're not lucky enough to enjoy the sunshine all summer long. It's good for a rainy day at home or a warmer day in the garden.
