In late September the South East of America was hit by a crushing hurricane: Hurricane Helene. It has been deemed to be the worst ever since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Helene started in Florida’s Gulf and moved to Georgia and the Carolinas and even managed to give Tennessee some torrential rain. South Carolina has been the most affected by her with around 63 deaths, many evacuations, millions without power and almost 400 roads shut due to the storm. Residents have been begging for supplies and have camped wherever they can after their homes were wiped out in the blink of an eye.
Hurricane Helene managed to get up to category 4 with 140m/ph winds, water levels raised to 15 feet which reached traffic light levels. Due to this a hospital in Tennessee was blocked in and 58 patients and staff were stranded on the roof waiting for a rescue team. Many authorities have been sent out over the states to help out which include 1,000 National Guard Troops, 1,500 emergency personnel, 940 search and rescue teams and around 8,000 US Coast Guard members.
The Aftermath
Around 231 are known to have died during the disaster with over half of those being in North Carolina, it is also known that President Biden will be bringing in 1,000 soldiers to help bring supplies with the National Guard in North Carolina. Unfortunately, the damage is so dire that it is still unknown about the amount of damage the hurricane caused. Homes were literally picked up and swept away by the current of the floods, cars were thrown around, roads were blocked and destroyed. It'll take many years and billions of dollars for the states to recover and will take a lot of manpower to do so. But, humanity comes first over the community and the towns and cities that were destroyed are focussed on getting everyone safe, getting supplies and rehoming people for the time being.
