The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh

Maisie Fender

‘The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh’ is a book that features a boy called Billy who starts secondary school, this book - by first-time author Helen Rutter - follows his journey into secondary school. One thing which makes Billy very shy is the fact he has a stammer, which he is desperate to get rid of, so has a book to help him, called “ How to get rid of a stammer."

Billy is a 12 year old boy who dreams to be a stand up comedian but there is one obstacle in his way; he has a stammer which he thinks is bad and he thinks that he will never reach his dream. Billy bravely starts high school and he doesn’t talk until the 'Me, me speech', which is a speech that you do at the start of high school so everyone can get to know you.

Billy has a little sister named Chloe and she loves ponies. He lives with his mum and dad and is very close to them. His grandma is called “ Granny Bread” - you’ll find out why when you read it! She and Billy love to watch “Blue Planet”. The mother and father fight sometimes, his mother is supportive and so is the rest of the family, with Billy's stammer.

Billy's new school, Bannerdale High, is his choice of a new school, which he was supposed to go but he didn’t want to, and this is the reason why he went to Bandale. At his old school he got bullied because of his stammer. His old school friend Skyla came as well, as Billy’s stammer is the same reason she got bullied. His old friend Ash went to a new school away from Billy, he has a new teacher (Mr Osho) and he hosts an indoor lunch club with his new friends and now he feels confident with people around to talk - except for Willam Blakemoore. In the story he had to do a cross country which he hated but he meets a year 12 called Ellie who changes his understanding of the bully Blakemore forever!

Willam Blakemore is a bully who targets Billy and forces him to talk - this is awkward for Billy as Blakemore makes Billy do stuff that he doesn't want to do. In the book Billy sees Blakemore with his mother, and his mother as mean to him, so I think that's why William is a Bully.

I would recommend this book to anyone my age, and personally I would rate it 4.5 stars.
