The Book Thief Review

By Lily Scott, Writer

The Book Thief is an amazing novel written by Markus Zusak that symbolizes that humans have the ability to be resilient and compassionate. The characters are faced with incredible obstacles which are overcome because of their relationships with others.

This book, set in Nazi Germany, is about a young girl called Liesel Meminger, in the time of the Second World War. She is sent to live with her foster family, after she has suffered terrible loss. Once she is there, she meets her new best friend, Rudy. A couple of years after Liesel has moved in with her new family, a very unexpected visitor arrives on her doorstep. The books that Liesel steals are a big part of the story, without them, Leisel wouldn’t be who she is now.

I loved reading this book because I always enjoy books set during the wars, or Victorian times, for example. This is because I loved learning about WW2 and it is very interesting to learn about. I could not put this book down, probably because it was so exciting, and there was always something going on so I needed to know what had happened.

This book is narrated by Death himself, which isn’t usual for a book. It is an extremely powerful concept of the story, and the fact that he follows Leisel for a large part of her life, even though he has tiring and never ending work, shows that he loves the little girl.

If you liked this book, then you should also look out for A Berlin Love Song. This is also set in Nazi Germany during WW2 and is about a boy in the Hitler Youth Program. My Friend The Enemy is also very similar, except it is set in Britain and is about a boy who befriends a German pilot.

I would recommend this book to you if you love books that make you feel happy, excited, scared and heartbroken all the way through. It is definitely for slightly older readers, from about Year 7 and up, as there are parts that are quite violent. It's one of the first books I’ve read about WW2 that is from a German’s point of view, and it really makes you think.
