While we have been preparing for Christmas, the create department and a handful of talented CLV students have been hard at work producing their annual performance. This year the team star in “That’s so N00ughties” with a collection of hits from our childhood. The nostalgic show features many different artistic ensembles including the school’s Orchestra, the ‘Music and Theatre Productions’ team and the some of the school’s best rock bands. All these groups came together for what was an outstanding show.

The show opened up with a dazzling display from Music and Theatre Productions of the Black Eyed Peas smash hit “I Gotta Feeling”. The whole crew lit the stage up with a combination of singing and complex choreography. The song was not lying when it says “Tonight is gunna be a good night” and started the show off with the bang the whole crowd wanted.

One of the young stars of the show was seen early in the first act; Hannah Sanderson, the talented year 7, took the stage solo to perform a beautiful rendition of “Defying Gravity”. The song from the smash hit Wicked left the audience amazed at the control and power of Hannah’s voice at such a young age. I know for one I am already looking forward to see Hannah perform this Easter in the school show and hopefully in many more school productions to come.

The first act left the audience eagerly anticipated with a teaser for the up and coming production of “Back to the 80s”; the show will be performed in 2019 at easter by the Music and Theatre Productions team and has already created a buzz of excitement. The audience got a glimpse of their opening song “Kids in America” and fell in love with the show months before opening night. I am looking forward to seeing the team suit up again in Easter and perform the musical in full.

As a big fan of Harry Potter, I and many others in the audience were excited to see the 2nd Act open with the school’s very own Orchestra performing Hedwig’s theme tune. The tune brought back great memories of watching the films and reading the books that has been a pillar of 21st Century culture. The Orchestra displayed their musical talents with strings, woodwind and brass instruments all combining to produce a true delight to the ears.

The 2nd act also showed us an oral masterclass from the singing ensemble. The handful of students harmonised beautifully to two famous hits from the 2000s, “I’m Yours” and “I believe in a thing called Love”. Both performances demonstrated the skill in control and harmony of the students and really made sure their hard work paid off. The entire ensemble should be proud of their performance and I’m sure they’ll produce something just as breathtaking next year.

True talent was displayed by our Sixth Form Students in their ode to Green Day. Becca Craig and Amy Langdown provided the vocals with Jack Dixon on the Drums and Jonnie Vass on the guitar. All four of them showed mastery in their field with a flawless rendition of “American Idiot” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”. Jack Dixon went on to show us his ability on the guitar performing the theme tune to the show “Men Behaving Badly”. The sketch had the audience chuckling in their seats while SLV students demonstrated their acting skills in re-enacting some of the show’s best scenes.

The show finished on a high with a mashup of songs from the 2000s. The number sent me back to my childhood days watching MTV and was accompanied by the talented dancing of Music and Theatre Productions, leaving the audience thrilled with their night. The show was a blast from start to finish and really displayed some of the amazing talent that students at CLV possess. A huge congratulations has to be given to those students and staff who worked tirelessly to put on a great performance. I know me and many of the audience are already lining up to get our tickets to “Back to the 80s” that will be in Easter 2019. I would highly recommend getting tickets as soon as they are available from the create department and can’t wait to see the show. Hope all those involved have a great time and of course break a leg!
