Sonic Behind The Scenes

Challenge Wednesday Writer

Have you ever wondered when Sonic started? Or who made him? Here you can find all the info you've ever wanted to know and more, read on if you wish to know more.

Sonic started with a blue ball !!!

Sonic first appeared in a video game in 1991 June 23rd as he was made by Sega designer, Yuji Naka, but as a blue ball rolling through a tube. He remained this way until an algorithm for a more complex Sonic game was made, which used high speed thrills that no video game had ever used. Sonic raced through all different levels at amazing speeds, his favourite place to run being Green Hills. Sega did not leave the original idea to waste though, you'll find Sonic hurling through tubes on the regular.

What didn’t you know about sonic?

Sonic is blue to match the Sega logo as he is their mascot - he has now been the Sega mascot for 30 years. He was also a rabbit before he was a hedgehog, he attacked with his ears! Sega soon realised this was a bad idea and changed him into a hedgehog, referring to him as Mr Needlemouse (his code name). Have you ever thought, 'what about Tails?' Tails didn't actually come into the Sonic games until the second game was released. A competition mode was added as well as a multiplayer mode that made Sonic 2 a huge success.

The rivalry

When Sonic came out Mario was already the talk of the town. Mario is the Nintendo mascot. Sega and Nintendo were rivals so Sonic was made to compete with Mario. The first clash between Mario and Sonic - the speedy hedgehog with attitude and the famous plumber with the moustache.

Modern Sonic

Now Sonic has starred in almost 90 video games and 5 cartoon series but sadly in 2001 Sega went out of the console making business. However, they are still making games today.

The rivalry between Sega and Nintendo has ended - they even created 2 games together called 'Mario and Sonic Olympic Winter Games' and 'Mario and Sonic Olympic Games'. Sonic has been out for 30 years now but is still zooming around green hills and defeating Eggman. Overall, not much has changed as Sonic is still the mascot of Sega and is hoped to be for many years to come.
