A positive view on things is always a great mindset to have. It gives you the opportunity to see the best in people and it also makes it easier to overcome your worries and fears. This article will tell you how to stay positive during this troubling time!
‘Positivity: the practice of being or tendency to be positive or optimistic in attitude.’
Your brain works better when you are positive. This is because, when you are happy, or optimistic or generally feeling positive, your brain produces serotonin (the ‘happiness hormone’) and decreases production of cortisol (the ‘stress hormone’). Research suggests that 40% of your happiness comes from the right choices you make. If you are a happy person, you are probably smarter too. Happiness has an influence on your brain, helping it grow, improve and expand. Another surprising fact about positivity is that it can actually help you live longer. Being happy can also give you greater resistance to illnesses, even just to colds! Whilst being optimistic and happy helps ourselves, it can also have an impact on those around us. Positivity is just like a cold. If you have the cold, and you're around others, the chances are that they are most likely to get it too.
However, scientists suggest that you should view positivity and negativity like a sailboat, as negative emotions balance the boat, and positivity is the mast, driving the boat forwards. You shouldn’t eliminate sadness, because that would cause the boat to capsize, but you should balance these emotions with cheery ones.
‘Happiness depends on ourselves’
So how can you be happy and stay positive yourself?
Spend a couple of minutes each day to write down something that made you happy that day. This could be a small success, someone who made you smile, even a funny shaped cloud! Then, by the end of the year, you will have a whole notebook filled with happy thoughts. You could also use that time to make a gratitude journal, writing about something you are grateful for. If you want to make others feel as happy as you, smile, do one kind act for your friends or just check in on your family! Why don’t you try some meditating? Having healthy relationships are also a huge source of happiness. Research shows that athletic people are naturally optimists. This is because they get more fresh air and are out in nature more often.
