Is Football Just for Men?

By Maja Chamera

Different people or Different worlds?

“Women are from Venus, men are from Mars” is a phrase that is used to explain differences in the way women and men think, feel, and act.

There are many stereotypical differences between men and women and the most common one can relate to differing abilities in sport. These stereotypes cause a lot of disagreement such as “men should only play football” or “women are less athletic than men.” Gender stereotyping also works its way into childhood toys: girls are expected to play with prams and dolls whereas boys play with footballs and cars.

How are men and women perceived differently in sport?

One of the most challenging stereotypes which female athletes unfairly had to face is the stereotype that women are 'weaker' and 'less athletic' than men. This prevents women from being accepted as equal athletes; women also get fewer opportunities, scholarships and funds. However, men have a different experience and get taught to prioritise self-reliance, emotional control, and physical toughness.

Sports have long been a significant part of men’s lives, providing an opportunity for exercise and competition. Male athletes in particular have achieved significant success in various sports, from football to basketball, tennis and more. Though, women aren't recognised like the men are and they are not publicised like they are because they don't have the same equal rights in sports. Within the media, male sports are advertised greater leading to them being more popular, whereas you never see women's tennis or football. The last time the women were properly recognised was their huge achievement of winning Euro 2022.

Why aren't women recognised?

Women are pressured to join such sports like volleyball, netball, gymnastics, and skating and many more, while men play football, cricket, rugby and all the 'harsh' sports. Men are seen as 'tougher' and 'stronger' than women and that's why they play these sports. In turn, the media thinks the women are much weaker because of these stereotypes.

Negative stereotypes are harmful to women and girls participating in, or wanting to participate in, sport and physical activity that men most play.

From researching this topic I have found that football is not only for men but because of things like media representation and stereotypes it makes it harder for women to get into the sport and be successful.

Let's improve the future generations and make football easier to access by acting today for a better tomorrow because, if not us, then who? If not now? Then when?
