Do We Need to Hold Ourselves Accountable for Climate Change?

By Nathan Batey

I think as a generation we are not doing anything to stop the production of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas; we're ultimately allowing our planet to be destroyed.

How are we making this worse?

We, as a small planet in the universe, are burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) at such a rapid rate (around 11 billion cubic metres of fossil fuels are burned each day). This is sending species extinct, decreasing the landmass of the poles and also raising the sea levels to the point where islands in Oceania such as Tuvalu are 2 metres above sea level. This is dangerously low.

Well how can we stop this?

We can stop this by harnessing the power of renewable energy. As a planet we have so many options of renewable energy: solar, wind and even water. As a rainy nation, we could use the abundance of rain to our advantage to power many homes.

My personal opinion

I think absolutely everyone should be held accountable as it all of our problems started from the industrial revolution, when our ancestors started to mine coal and burn it. Now we are mass burning coal, oil and gas to power our modes of transport as well as our machines and houses. We have to opt for the renewable energy options and even top engineers and architects across the globe need to come together and come up with some effective ideas to tackle this problem.

(Not so) fun facts:

  • Did you know that by 2050 scientists estimate that the average temp of the earth will rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius.

  • Climate change could be irreversible by 2030.

  • Most coral reefs are bleached meaning that they are losing their colour leading to fish being unable to hide from predators and consequently their extinction.

  • More than 1 million species face extinction today.

  • We are now creating a mass extinction event similar to the asteroid which wiped out the dinosaurs 65 millions years ago.

What can the regular person do?

Well, opt for solar panels on your accommodation. This will decrease the energy from fossil fuels needed to power your house/apartment. Moreover, try to aim for an eco-friendly life such as recycling rubbish and even investing in metal/reusable bottle for drinking. Save energy by not leaving the lights on. Finally go for more eco-friendly travel options such as walking, biking and even running instead of going in a car.
