A student from Cramlington Learning Village has reached the final of a national football freestyle competition. Callum West, Year 7, was selected as one of five national winners of the competition and travelled down to Manchester on the 23rd of February.
The competition held by Vimto on Twitter saw entrants tweet a freestyle video with the goal of being better than football legend Phil Neville’s stepover. The competition was held to celebrate the partnership between Vimto and Salford Football Club after the soft drinks company signed a deal with the team which is partly owned by Neville. The prize saw five lucky winners meet co-founders Gary Neville and Paul Scholes in the hotel of football, next to Old Trafford, to have a trickshot evening.
Callum’s dad sent some videos of his football tricks and a few weeks later he found out he was one of the five selected winners.
Callum said; “I am so excited to train with two legends”
“We met the two footballing legends and were told all the different trickshots. There was a lot of people from local press there taking pictures but all winners concentrated on getting the ball through the tyre and showing of their skills.”
One of Callum’s fellow winners said: “I know that i sounds easy but there [were] two inflatable grapes in the way of the target. It was harder than it looked.” All the participants had three goes each and neither Gary Neville or Paul Scholes hit the raspberry.
The competition was an opportunity for the Under 17s from all over the country to show off what their football skills and gain experience from the Salford academy boys.
Callum said “I enjoyed my time in Salford and the experience was amazing, Getting to meet two legends of football was just a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
