The Games
Starting on the 4th of February, China will host its first Winter Olympics in its capital, Beijing, which will end on the 20th of February. Beijing is one of the biggest cities in the world with a population of 20 million. It seems that it will be very busy! With 87 countries participating, there will be 7 sports. Beijing is now the first city to ever host both the summer and winter Olympic Games. The UK has targeted to get 5-12 medals, which is likely based on past Winter Olympics. This may seem fun and games however the UK has thought differently.
The UK Boycott
In the Winter Olympics, there will be 109 events in total and the UK will be participating. However, China has had a long history with human rights issues and because of this, the UK will be boycotting from the games. This means they will withdraw some people. The UK will still participate but no ministers or officials will attend. Also, former Tory leader Ian Smith made accusations of human rights abuses in China. The Chinese government has denied these brutal regimes but the government has been reported to be hurting people for their religion. In some cases, torture and even death have been claimed.
