Tories turn on Truss as she is forced to resign

Liz Truss has resigned after 45 days in office - a record low for a British Prime Minister - so what went wrong, so quickly?

Liz Truss took her place in office on the 6th September after having defeated Rishi Sunak in a leadership contest. Taking advantage of current issues, she promised lower taxes, to grow the economy and to deal with soaring energy prices. Her attempts to cut taxes in the mini-budget - which had nearly all of its policies U-turned - had catastrophic consequences on the economy.

The British pound fell to its lowest ever rate against the US dollar after her and ex-chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini-budget was announced. She then decided to remove Kwarteng after a mere 38 days on the job, and replaced him with Jeremy Hunt - who then proceeded to overturn nearly every single policy that she had announced.

That then led to questions surrounding her authority and if she was truly in charge, and many Tory MPs began to look at Jeremy Hunt as their de facto leader. All of this led to the Tories being decimated in the polls, with the rate of public intentions to vote Tory plunging all the way down to only 23%.

All of this turmoil resulted in last night’s extravaganza at the House of Commons, in which Tory MPs were reportedly told they were to vote in a no-confidence vote, when in reality they were voting on lifting the ban on fracking. Many were left confused and upset, with some even being manhandled into voting booths and reprimanded by senior MPs.

This chaos resulted in one thing - the downfall of Liz Truss. She lost the control and trust of her party, and lost the trust (if she ever had it) of the country. We will have our 3rd Prime Minister of the year by next week, and if the Tories can somehow avoid a General Election, then we will have another 2 years to wait until we - the people - get to decide our leader.
