Depiction of the resurrection of Jesus, celebrated by Christians on Easter Sunday

The exciting day has arrived! It is finally Easter, and the time for eating Easter eggs is here! But, as the day unfolds, you may be asking yourself, why do we celebrate Easter? In this article, you can find out, and when enjoying this amazing day, keep in mind the true meaning of it.

The Crucifixion and Resurrection

The reason we celebrate Easter is because of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. In around 30AD there was a man called Jesus who, according to Christianity, performed many miracles. Sadly, some of those in power did not like what Jesus was saying, and asked for him to be crucified. After he was put before a man named Pilot, he was found not guilty. But the crowd screamed and Pilot gave in to the pressure and Jesus was sentenced to death.

This was a sad day for Christianity, and all of Christ’s followers.

Soon, he was forced up a tall hill named Golgotha, with a cross on his back. He was so badly beaten that he had to be helped. When he reached the peak of the mountain he was nailed to his cross. Many crowds shouted to him to save himself, but he knew that he would need to die for humanity. So, Jesus passed away.

After three days, in the early morning of Easter Sunday, two young ladies went to the tomb where Jesus had been laid to rest. When they arrived, the tomb was open, and empty. Suddenly, an angel appeared, telling them that Jesus had risen from the dead!

Why we have Easter eggs

But even after that story many things don’t add up. An example of this is the fact that we have Easter eggs. There are two main reasons why we have this modern tradition. One reason is that eggs are a symbol for fertility and growth, which are linked with the beginning of spring. But the more religious side of the eggs is that they symbolise the empty tomb that the two ladies found on Easter Sunday.

Enjoy your Easter!

I hope this article has given you an insight into the origins of Easter, and why it is an important day to Christians. Even though some of our traditions have changed (like eating Easter eggs!) the religious holiday has a significant impact on many people's lives! So, have a great Easter, and remember why we are having it.
