The Amazon rainforest- a mesmerizing natural wonder- it's luscious green trees cover two and a half million square miles and is home to about 2.5 million insect species, 1294 birds, 427 mammals, 428 amphibians, 378 reptiles and even many native tribes. These species are all specially adapted to the rainforest life in very unique ways, for example, the spider monkey it has long, strong limbs to help it travel through the rainforest trees.
Sadly, their homes are now being torn down by us humans. They've lived in the rainforest for over thousands of years but humans have come along and just torn it apart! Thousands, probably even hundreds of thousands, of the rainforest’s trees have been cut down and none have been replanted. These animals and even millions of peoples' homes are being destroyed - we need to act now!
Scientists estimate that about 137 species go extinct every day in the Amazon, but now they think it will be within 40 years if no action is taken against deforestation. The Amazon rainforest will be gone and all of the people and animals will have nowhere to go.
This will affect us humans in drastic ways too, as a lot of our food and even medicine comes from the Amazon. Not only will we no longer have that supply of food and medicine, but also the levels of carbon emissions will rise and our oxygen supply will decrease as the Amazon provides about 20% of the world's oxygen. So, recycle, use less paper, or plant a tree - even one tree makes a huge difference to our earth.
