Destiny truly arrived for the Avengers with this highly impressive, shocking and thrilling film.
It’s been ten years since Tony Stark introduced himself as Iron Man, and in that time, audiences have seen heroes from all across the galaxy defend their homes against all kind of foes. From facing off against Nazi scientists (Captain America: The First Avenger) to the forces of a living planet (Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2), Earth’s Mightiest Heroes truly have seen it all.
Avengers: Infinity War is the first part in a thrilling climax of comic book cinema, and sees at least 27 heroes battle off against the mad Titan Thanos, including a laundry list of favourites such as Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Star-Lord (Peter Quill), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).
The basic premise of the film is simple. The Avengers - the original roster of heroes from the very first team-up film plus some newer faces from Marvel’s latest offerings - team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to stop Thanos from claiming the Infinity Stones - primordial gems that each contain a tremendous amount of power deriving from the essence of the universe. The wielder of these six stones - Power, Time, Mind, Soul, Space and Reality - becomes infinitely powerful, and can wipe out half of life across the universe in just seconds.
Unlike previous Marvel films, we see the characters filled with desperation and the film has little hope. Any optimism is sharply ripped from us fans by Thanos, just to amplify his power. Nevertheless Marvel did not fail to provide us with humour even in the most dire of situations with some of our favourite characters from across the galaxy meeting and interacting for the first time. The Russo brothers use this delicate balance between humour and despair to deliver a truly unique addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Infinity War sees memorable character interactions, emotional backstories and heart-stopping battles weaved together to create a masterpiece. Although the sheer amount of characters did mean that character development was limited for some, this was made up for by the constant tension and emotional intrigue that connected the audience with the characters. The film truly was an emotional one - it is best to go into the cinema with some tissues and a readiness to sit in silence afterward to absorb the gravity of the events. As always with Marvel films, remain until after the credits for a tease into the future.
What is next for the team remains unanswered and with the as yet untitled Avengers 4 movie, fans will have to wait till May 2019 to receive answers to their questions. Marvel will release 2 titles between now and May 2019 including “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and “Captain Marvel”, which should tide over fans until the release. Until then - there are 18 other films to rewatch on a loop should this not suffice.
