Plastic VS Ocean

By Beatrice Allen

In the fight of plastic vs ocean, who will win? Can YOU make a difference? And will we be able to live in a world where plastic pollution does not exist?

The presence of plastics in our oceans is causing severe damage to marine ecosystems.

Plastic is an amazingly diverse material which has improved our daily lives. However, there is a problem...

The health of our oceans and the organisms within them are under threat. We have been careless and plastic has found its way into the ocean. This now deadly material is dominating the seas and killing creatures. Did you know that it is predicted that within 20 years the Great Barrier Reef will be gone as a result of plastic pollution?

Birds, fish and other organisms of the oceans are getting entangled in, strangled by and even consuming plastic. Many animals mistake plastic and other bits of rubbish for food. It doesn't end there. When plastics break down they don’t just disappear - the material becomes microplastics and microplastics can work themselves up the food chain and even end up in the fish we eat! Moreover, these microplastics absorb toxic industrial chemicals! One thing is for sure, this needs to stop because plastic kills.

However, there are many organisations fighting against plastic pollution. Plus, we can do our bit as well to save the amazing marine life on Earth. It is just little things everyday that can make a difference; for instance, reducing the amount of single use plastic you use daily. Personally, I am disgusted at how many plastic items- which are single use - are disposed of everyday. It is estimated that 50% of plastic is just used once and then thrown away. Can you believe that?

And it is not just the ocean that the plastic pollution plague is infesting, it is our towns and cities too! Littering is a big problem and I urge you reading this article to help in the fight against plastic pollution because remember, plastic kills. Plastic vs ocean: join the fight.
