By HollieMuir

Even though we’ve been living in Northumberland most of our lives, a lot of us probably haven’t even realised how many places there are to visit here! Here are some ideas for places you can visit in our county in any weather, even if it is mostly rainy or cold.

Even though we’ve been living in Northumberland most of our lives, a lot of us probably haven’t even realised how many places there are to visit here! Here are some ideas for places you can visit in our county in any weather, even if it is mostly rainy or cold.

Some of my favourite places to visit here are famous all over the country, for example Lindisfarne and Hadrian’s Wall. Most of the places in Northumberland are very historic and interesting which is what attracts tourists from all over the world to the region, but if you just want a walk or an enjoyable picnic, then there are still plenty of places for you.

Firstly, in Northumberland there are a lot of National Trust and English Heritage sites to visit which are great for a day trip and are beautiful to go and see.

The National Trust sites are:

-Cragside House and Gardens

-Wallington Hall

-Lindisfarne Castle

-The Farne Islands

-Seaton Delaval Hall

These are all great places to visit if you love history and/or glorious gardens. Whilst here you can get lost in characterful houses and in grand gardens which will fill your imagination with visions of the past.

The English Heritage sites are ruined buildings or castles for history lovers, for example:

-Warkworth Castle

-Dunstanburgh Castle

-Aydon Castle

All of these places are great for a family day out or just to get out into the countryside for a long walk. Appreciating these places through photography is one of the ways we get tourists and locals to visit; all of these locations make great places to take some amazing photographs.

Northumberland is full of historic castles like Bamburgh Castle, buildings and even walls like Hadrian's Wall, which is a spectacular World Heritage Site. Along this wall you can follow trails, discover magnificent landscapes and follow people’s stories from the past.

Another wonderful place to visit in Northumberland is The Alnwick Castle and Gardens. The castle, built during the Norman era and also known for its use in the Harry Potter movies as the location of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, is a great place to enjoy the history of our county. Likewise, The Alnwick Garden, a modern addition to the ancient castle invites its visitors to a day of garden architecture and pleasure. It is a great place to relax and always has special visitors in and around the gardens. Again, all of these places are amazing sites for amateur or professional photographers.

There is so much more to discover in Northumberland, which is full of stunning places many local residents haven’t even visited yet. We have so much history as a county and should be proud to share this with family and friends. So, next time you are struggling to decide where to go out for the day, think of Northumberland and go discover something new.
