Matt Hancock: Hardly a Celebrity, Please Get Out of Here

Updated: Nov 18, 2022

I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here is a beloved show among millions of households in the UK watching celebrities face unnerving challenges in the jungle. It’s usually a light hearted show we can all enjoy, unfortunately this year our screens have been plagued with the former health secretary, Matt Hancock. Clearly he’s also facing the strains of the cost of living crisis with his next attempt to be Britain's bullying target.

By now I’m sure we have all formed our own opinions about Matt Hancock being on the show, and the majority of us are furious. For those who don’t know why Matt Hancock is seen as a villain to the public, he was responsible for making the guidelines during Covid, among other responsibilities. He deprived thousands of families' time with their dying loved ones only to break his own rules by being caught on CCTV cheating on his wife. He was forced to resign as health secretary, however he’s still roaming in our government guilt free as a Member of Parliament. But don’t worry because Hancock apologised on I’m a Celeb and defended his actions by saying he fell in love with the woman he had an affair with - so clearly it was worth the rule-breaking!

Other contestants on the show have made it known they don’t support Matt Hancock being on the show, as they’ve shared their own stories about how his rules affected them. Charlene White told Hancock about her aunt dying from Covid in the first wave and being unable to go to the hospital to visit her or hug her other family members at the funeral because they were following guidance. Real families were affected by the rules that he set into place and later broke. Seeing this person on our screens daily is an insult to the government and a bigger insult to the families who suffered at the hands of his guidelines.

Not only is his appearance a mockery to the public but Matt Hancock is being paid £400,000 for participating, which is reportedly one of the biggest payouts made on the show. I don’t know what the people responsible for recruiting participants of the show were thinking, but clearly they weren’t if they paid that much for one of the nation’s most despised people. Why should this man be rewarded for his catastrophic actions? Supposedly, he plans on donating to multiple charities with his vast sum so at least someone is benefitting from his jarring presence on TV.

The first definition that comes up for the word celebrity is ‘a famous person, especially in entertainment or sport.’ Matt Hancock is in neither industry, he is a politician who should be working for this country not making a mockery out of it. What does it say about our country if we’re allowing people of power to get away with these types of actions without any repercussions?
