Is F1 Just an Ordinary Sport? Or is it an Extraordinary One?

By Hollie Beaton

F1 has been around since 1950. People have said that it's just a sport where they drive around in circles. I am here to say that I disagree. Formula One is a motorsport  filled with passion, love and competition. This is how it works: Formula One has 23 races on a calendar around the world - there are 10 teams and 20 drivers. Each race the places 1-10 get points after they finish. The final race (Abu Dhabi) helps to decide who the overall world champion will be that year.

Formula One fans celebrate like no others. Ferrari fans go all out; they have paint cannons the colours of classic Ferrari. Fans in this sport love the thrill of it (the drivers do too!) Although it is dangerous, the drivers thrive on an adrenaline rush, especially when they get to experience what winning is like.

“I'm a winner, and I want to win every single race, and I will always go for it.” - Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing driver.

The Dangers of Formula One

Although Formula One is an amazing sport, it is still very dangerous. Drivers can be put in a situation where they can die. For example, Niki Lauda was a highly respected diver who raced in the 70s/80s. In 1976 at the German Grand Prix at the  Nürburgring, he got into a fatal crash with flames that were 800 degrees Celsius. But he loved the sport so much he came back to race 40 days later (although he was still in terrible pain). Not only him but another driver, Jules Bianchi, had sadly passed away at the 2014 Suzuka grand prix due to a tractor being on the track. However, these drivers don’t go unnoticed and the Formula One community honours them, often recognising their achievements by using statues.

To conclude, I personally think that F1 is an extraordinary sport, spanning the world and conquering people's hearts. Although people may argue that it is just “people driving around in circles,” I completely disagree. Formula One is about the thrill seeking twist and turns, the winning, the losing. Formula One invites anyone and everyone to watch and fall in love with the sport, the athletes, the teams and everything about it.
