By Millie Love

How one woman changed the world of nursing and has inspired thousands since.

Throughout history some women have rebelled against the societal rules of  what they can and can’t do. A very well known woman who changed the course of history and the way people look at women for ever was Florence Nightingale.

Nightingale was born on the 12th of May, 1820, In Florence, Italy. She and her sister were educated at home by their Father. As well as being intelligent, Florence was also a pretty girl. Her parents seemed to favour her more, as they knew they could marry her off to a wealthy man. Florence, being a rebellious teenage girl had other plans and in 1837 reportedly heard the voice of god speak to her, telling her of good for humanity. Even though she wasn’t taught by a proper professor, as girls weren’t allowed to be, she travelled town to town caring for the sick and injured, bringing food and soft bedding while trying her best in the disgusting conditions.

Florence started to enjoy caring for the sick and started to ask if she could go to hospitals to learn more about nursing. While her parents disapproved and said it was most unladylike, she managed to persuade them. When she arrived at the hospitals what stood before her appalled her; wounded soldiers lay on the floor on grimy surfaces, blood soaked sheets and walls, drunk and poorly educated nurses and rat infested wards. The over crowded rooms were a mess, and the nurses had paid no attention to the injured. Often the men would expect to die in a hospital instead of getting better.

Florence Nightingale rebelled from her parents and took it upon herself to make hospitals a more welcoming and hygienic place to be. Many doctors refused to let her clean hospitals as they have little money, leading to Florence using her own savings to make the soldiers safer. She also made sure every man had a comforting friend to go to, as being from the battlefront can be scary. When the men saw her comforting light coming down the hallways they knew it was the lady with the lamp. But she didn’t stop there. She worked in hospitals all over Europe and continued to feed and care for the injured, inspiring millions due to her work and attitude.

The theme this year for International Women’s Day is #ProfessorProgress. It brings all types of people together and celebrates Womanhood as a whole.
