What is it?
Inside Out 2 is a classic Pixar film, a sequel to the first film where we see Riley explore her emotions. There are 5 core emotions: Joy who is responsible for Riley’s happiness, Fear who keeps Riley safe, Disgust who stops Riley from doing anything disgusting, Anger who keeps Riley determined (especially in hockey) and Sadness who makes sure Riley can feel sad and cry at appropriate times. We see Riley learn to balance these emotions while Joy and Sadness have to save a core memory. These are really important moments in Riley's life, “they’re all happy, not to brag” which is what Joy says when she is introducing them.
How do the first and second film link?
In the first film, Riley is exploring her core emotions and figuring out herself. Joy is mostly the head of her emotions throughout her childhood. Then in the second when she’s all grown up, she goes through puberty, changing her emotions. 4 new emotions are here. Anxiety, Ennui, Embarrassment and Envy. Her core emotions get suppressed so they have to find a way to get out of suppression. We also see parts of a character called Nostalgia, who is a typical grandmother figure in the way she acts and speaks. Anxiety is an orange character, who pre-plans things for the future. He is also responsible for Riley’s panic attacks (which are him overworking on the panel), which only Joy can calm and prevent. Embarrassment is a big pink character who makes Riley feel uncomfortable in certain situations, he overthinks and makes Riley regret things she has done (or embarrasses her in front of the best player on the high school hockey team!) Ennui is the boredom, a purple creature, and they make Riley seem disengaged or uninterested. Finally we have Envy, a young teal girl who is responsible for Riley’s role models and some jealousy. When she first appears, she is in front of her role model, the head of the hockey team, Envi says “Woah, look at her hair." This shows her jealousy shine through - but Riley learns to control these emotions.
Hidden Gems
There are a few hidden gems in this film. One of which you have to stay until after the credits to watch, which I decided to do. The secret scene at the end of the credits follows ‘Deep dark secret’, a character who is ashamed because of Riley's darkest secret. When he reveals it, all we hear is nonsense, which in my opinion is frustrating as we can never find out her darkest secret - but it was fun to see some extra material! There's another one as well, as all the ‘back of the mind’ memories have turned into Riley’s personality and her opinions.
My final rating
I give this film a 8.5/10 because it was like a core memory watching it, especially with my friends, but the secret scene was a little disappointing. I did dress as Riley as best as I could for this film viewing. I wore light blue jeans with a yellow vest top and a yellow chequered jacket, my black Dr Martens and a blue scrunchie in my hair with my hair in a bun. It was also really hot out that day so if you’re planning on dressing up as characters, dress appropriately for the weather, that was my mistake. This film was a core memory for me and I strongly recommend watching it in cinemas or on Disney when it comes out there.
