Do you think investing £1,000 towards a new pair of Google Glasses is worth it? Or is this just some big scheme for invasion of privacy?
Back in 2013, Google released their newest product: the Google Glasses. They are high-tech glasses which function identically to a phone or computer - but just in front of your eyes. This product has the ability to record videos, take photos, access the internet, maps, calendars and much more, all by voice command.
However, Google discontinued the production of this extreme futuristic piece of technology due to its extortionate price (£1,000). Although some claim that this is understandable for such a high-quality product, its failure originated from the lack of purchase. Not everybody is made out of money, Google.
Arguments have circulated the internet ever since Google Glasses were first revealed to the world. So, why would somebody buy a pair?
- Many critics claim that its convenience is appealing. You are able to control the glasses without using your hands, and send messages using your voice.
- A pair of Google Glasses will also allow you to capture moments in your life through a realistic and accurate perspective.
- Travel abroad a lot? Google Glasses can help you translate foreign languages easily and also respond with the correct phrases or words.
- Students could record lessons, including notes to help get what they could have forgotten to write down.
- Doctors may accurately record surgeries for recalling specific information and reviewing work.
- The police may find Google Glasses useful too as they can record events that would justify proof.
However, if you can do all of these incredible things with such a useful product, then why are some complaining (aside from the price)?
- Google Glasses have raised speculations over invasion of privacy through the glasses’ supposed potential to eavesdrop on confidential conversations. Breaching of privacy can also occur as the video and camera can be misused so anybody can capture anything without letting the other person know about it.
- You cannot use these Google Glasses while driving as the picture, video or data will be in front of the eyes of the user, which can be incredibly distracting and dangerous
- Google Glass can be easily broken as it is a sensitive device. After all, it’s not made out of bulletproof glass. They can also become a waste of money if you immediately break them after purchase.
- Google Glasses cannot be used by those people who already have issues with their eyes and wear glasses daily. Could this be a form of discrimination?
So, where do you stand? Could these hi-tech, futuristic and functional glasses become a normality within modern society, or will Google Glasses continue to fail with its marketing and purchasing? Let us know by sending us an email or leaving a comment!
