Feminism And Wonderful Women Around the World!

Amelia Maddox

What is feminism and what does it mean to be a feminist?

When talking about feminism or to be specific, feminists, we need to ensure we know what a feminist actually is and what they stand for. Celebrities like Taylor swift, Ariana grande, Emma Watson and Beyoncé are all feminists. Feminism means that men and women have equal rights. No more, no less.

“We have to teach our boys the rules of equality and respect, so that as they grow up, gender equality becomes a natural thing. And we have to teach our girls that they can reach as high as humanly possible” - Beyoncé.

Marie Curie

One woman who has definitely changed the way people see women is Marie curie. When people said “Girls can’t do science, don’t be so silly”, that did not stop her from pursuing her career in science. She certainly proved everyone wrong when she won 2 Nobel prizes! Marie clearly has a lot of firsts - she was the first woman to win a Nobel prize and the first person to win 2 of them. When discovering radiation, Marie had no fancy lab - she only had her husband, Perrie Curie, for support. She died in 1934 proud of the impact she made on science and how scientists see women reaching their dreams and desires.

She was severely judged because of her passion however she did not give up! On the morning of May 20th 1932, 34-year-old Earhart set off from Harbour Grace on an expedition to fly across the Atlantic ocean. During her flight, Amelia suddenly went missing in July 1937. Her plane wreckage was never found, and she was officially declared lost at sea. Her disappearance remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the 20th century.

The Suffragettes

The Suffragettes were members of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) and were lead by Millicent Garrett Fawcett during the height of the Suffrage Movement, 1890 - 1990. They campaigned for women who believed in peaceful protest. In 1803 Emmeline Pankhurst and others, frustrated by the lack of progress, decided that more direct action was needed and founded the Women’s Social and Political Union.
