On Thursday 8th September, Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully in her Scottish residence of Balmoral.
Living a long life of 96 years, Queen Elizabeth II saw great social, economic and political change across the country as Britain began to rebuild its image as a post-war society. With an impressive reign of 70 years and 214 days, the Queen was the longest reigning monarch in British history - ascending to the throne in 1952 at the age of just 25 following the sudden death of her father. During her reign the Queen welcomed 15 Prime Ministers (spanning from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss), met 13 US Presidents and conducted hundreds of state visits across the Commonwealth and the wider world.
As news of the Queen's death rippled across the world in recent days, political leaders and public figures have offered their condolences to King Charles III and the wider Royal Family. Reminiscing on her kindness and sense of humour, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau described her as "one of [his] favourite people" while former US President Barack Obama praised the late monarch for a reign "defined by grace, elegance, and a tireless work ethic". Across the Commonwealth, leaders have noted the "special bond" she formed with nations as she heralded in the process of decolonisation and looked towards a future with a more modern Commonwealth.
Over the following days, weeks and months, we will see the transition from the Elizabethan era unfold as traditions deep-rooted in the history of the monarchy will be carried out in the public eye. Although he has not yet been crowned, Charles the 'Prince of Wales' is now 'King Charles III' at the age of 73 with his son and heir to the throne (Prince William) taking his father's former title.
