In 1887 someone called William Bell designed the shop as a train station. It was 32,000 square feet making it one of the biggest in the UK. The station was closed in 1968 and became a book shop in 1991.
This is when it was a train station before it was rebuilt into a second hand book shop. When you enter, you see small toy trains circling the top of the shop. There is comfy seating and a cafe which makes it more cosy to most people.
A bit about the owners
Stuart and Mary Manley own and run this bookshop and have been for 31 years. Mary was born in Missouri and her professional background was very academic. Stuart was born in county Durham during the second World War. His professional background was mostly business and both are interested in train sets.
Reviews/Interviews.
Personally, I like the shop because it's cosy, has a great range of book genres and has books for all ages. I am interested in fantasy books, historic books and books based on real life stories. Lets interview another person who has been to barter books:
Beatrice Allen: she likes the shop because a train around the top and the smell of books are really nice. She is interested in mystery, history and fiction.
Fun facts
Did you know that barter books has a range of 45,000 books to choose from and more arriving. 40% of the visitors are from outside the area, they get 350,000 visitors a year.
